Aari work is a type of hand-embroidery whose emergence can be traced back to 12th century during the Mughal period. This exquisite thread work is achieved by stretching the fabric tightly over a wooden frame, after which a crochet-like pen needle with a hook is used to pierce the traced lines of the pattern. The hook then pulls up the thread in a loop and forms a chain stitch as it's pierced in close proximity to the earlier pulled thread. Silk, cotton and wool thread is intrinsically used in Aari work. Intricate, colourful patterns form a dense, mesh-like covering on the base fabric giving this art form a versatile appeal. From garments to accessories to home furnishings, Aari embroidery is used to decorate myriad fabrics.
